✅ Bermuda — Yes, With Caveats
Bermuda goes fully brown November through March in Aiken. Perennial ryegrass overseeded in October holds green colour through winter. Bermuda is aggressive enough to push through the ryegrass in spring. Cost: green-up delayed 2–3 weeks, and a heavy ryegrass stand can stress Bermuda in a late-warming spring.
❌ Centipede — No
Centipede spreads slowly by stolons and greens up later than Bermuda. Ryegrass competing for light and moisture during that vulnerable window measurably weakens the stand, and repeated overseeding contributes to Centipede Decline. If a Centipede lawn has bare patches, fix the cause — thatch, pH, over-fertilization — rather than seeding over them.
🟡 Zoysia — Possible, Rarely Worth It
Zoysia holds its density through dormancy better than Bermuda, so the visual gain is smaller. Zoysia also greens up slowly, so ryegrass competition hurts more than it does on Bermuda. Usually we advise against it.
❌ St. Augustine — No
St. Augustine has poor traffic tolerance and slow stolon-only spread. Overseeding adds competition it cannot afford, and the mowing height mismatch — ryegrass wants 2 in, St. Augustine wants 3–4 in — makes it impractical.
Overseeding Process — October in Aiken
Seed when daytime highs are consistently in the 70s and nights in the 50s. Too early and summer heat kills seedlings; too late and ryegrass does not establish before cold slows it.
Drop the Bermuda to about 1 inch and bag the clippings. Seed needs to reach soil, not sit on a thatch layer.
Opening the canopy dramatically improves seed-to-soil contact. This is the step most DIY overseeding skips, and it is the main reason results disappoint.
Perennial rather than annual ryegrass — finer blade, better colour, cleaner spring transition. Heavier rates give denser colour but increase spring competition with the Bermuda.
Light daily watering keeps the seedbed moist. This differs from established-lawn watering, which should be deep and infrequent.
